Honor the Struggle- The Heart behind Healing Wings Counseling

When I first opened the doors to my practice back in 2008, I wanted a name that captured the deep, often painful, but ultimately beautiful process of emotional and spiritual transformation. For years, I served individuals seeking a safe space to heal, and though my roots began in Ohio, I am incredibly blessed to now bring that same heart for healing to our community here in North Carolina.

The name “Healing Wings Counseling” was born out of a timeless anonymous story that completely reshapes how we view our darkest seasons. It is a story about a butterfly, a cocoon, and the hidden purpose behind our pain:

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through a little hole. It all of a sudden seemed to stop making progress.  It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly emerged easily, but it had a swollen body and small-shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand, supporting its body weight. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings.

It was never able to fly.

What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening was God’s way of forcing fluid from the body into its wings. The struggle would be rewarded by the ability to fly!

The struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If God allowed us to go through our lives without obstacles, it would cripple us like it crippled the butterfly.

So think of a butterfly and its struggle when you are face to face with pain and strife ~ soon God will teach you how to fly!  So go and be Blessed!!

Healing Wings Counseling

It is completely human to want a quick fix. But as a Christian therapist, I have walked alongside hurting people for nearly two decades, and I have seen a beautiful, consistent truth: a real and forgiving God never wastes our seasons in the cocoon. The pressure you are feeling right now isn’t meant to break you; it is forcing the strength into your wings so that when you finally step into the light, you are truly ready to fly. So taking a first step when going out on the ledge is never easy. However, together- with a little hope and faith- we can prepare your wings together.

IN JOY your day! Dee Dee
